Hudbay Minerals Inc. is a dynamic, fast growing, global mining company with a base of operations in Manitoba (Canada), Peru and Arizona.  The Arizona Business Unit (ABU), Hudbay's newest business unit, is seeking a Water Resources Technician to assist and participate in various environmental compliance activities, studies and planning/permitting efforts for the Rosemont Copper Project (Project).

Reporting to the Environment Manager, the Water Resources Technician will be responsible for duties that include field activities for monitoring and sample collection, data review, and preparation of field notes and appropriate reporting.

Technicians will perform environmental fieldwork at the Project and mitigation locations. This position will involve extensive walking/hiking in a field environment, work outside on a regular basis regardless of weather, call-outs, late night and early morning emergency response, and work with hazardous materials.

This position is located at the Rosemont site, south of Tucson. Position may occasionally require work at the Tucson office.

JOB SUMMARY:

Perform tasks in support of monitoring and management plans and programs necessary to fulfill the requirements of the various permits.  This could include, but not be limited to, the following plans and permits/requirements:

  • Stormwater Monitoring Plans
  • Groundwater Monitoring Plans
  • Spring Monitoring Plans
  • Water Feature Monitoring Plans
  • Aquifer Protection Permit
  • 401 Certification and 404 Permit
  • Water Supply System Monitoring
  • Wastewater and Grey-Water Management Plans
  • Other monitoring as required by the Mine Plan of Operations

Candidate may be a technical generalist or may specialize in one or a combination of the following: hydrology, surface water management and/or general environmental management.

 Experience and capabilities must also include:

  1. Field experience
  2. Familiarity with study design
  3. Experience with multiple field sample techniques
  4. Data collection and interpretation
  5. Calculation and design
  6. Writing technical report and field reports

Candidates will be expected to:

  • Work on surface water program by performing water sampling and inspections, implementing stormwater management plans, and maintaining stormwater monitoring stations.
  • Work on spring water program by performing water sampling and inspections, and talking flow measurements
  • Work on groundwater program by performing manual water levels measurements and maintaining water level transducers, etc.
  • Coordinate with external consulting firms as needed regarding equipment maintenance and repair and groundwater well sampling.
  • Coordinate with external consulting firms regarding groundwater well sampling.
  • Be responsible for ensuring conditions of employment, employee policies, and safety protocols are followed.
  • Work independently and be self-motivated as well as collaborate when necessary.
  • Maintain records, prepare reports, and perform other administrative activities as necessary to meet compliance requirements. This will include planning and the notification of any material and/or staffing needs. General oversight of sampling inventory and maintenance of equipment/facilities.
  • Assist in the formulation of plans for existing and new water quality, wastewater, and water systems management programs.
  • Coordination with others will be required for preparation of documents, compliance reports, and Environmental Management System protocols. These coordination activities will include, but may not be limited to, the following:
  1. Monitoring and assisting in Geographic Information Systems (GIS) efforts.
  2. Development of grey-water/wastewater protocols.
  3. Stormwater management requirements.
  4. Preparation of sampling plans and appropriate implementation of sampling protocols and other requirements.
  • Perform other environmental monitoring and management duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION:

  • High School diploma or GED
  • Two (2) years' relevant work experience, including, but not limited to, water quality sampling, stormwater inspections, and water quality management
  • Knowledge of the laws, principles, and practices of water system or water quality management including conservation, protection and use
  • Knowledge of GIS and its uses related to water quality presentation
  • Knowledge of BADCT and BMPs as specified
  • Knowledge of riparian management
  • Knowledge of methods and equipment used in water quality and water quantity management

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Associate's and/or Bachelor's degree in Water Resources, Hydrogeology, Hydrology, Environmental Science or similar engineering discipline
  • Local ecological knowledge and contacts helpful but not required
  • MSHA and OSHA Hazwoper training a plus

Specific vision abilities may be required for this position. Hiking on trails and on uneven terrain required. Occasional fieldwork may require hikes of up to 10 miles.

The work environment will necessitate work near moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions such as hot and/or dry conditions. Work will be conducted in locations where noise, fumes, dust, toxic or caustic chemicals, and vibration may exist.

Employee will be expected to drive a company vehicle, rental vehicle and/or his/her own vehicle in the course of performing the job, Employee must be able to perform the physical functions of operating a motor vehicle, including use of eyes, ears, arms, hands, legs, and feet.  Employee must be able to prove that he/she has a current and valid driver's license. Employee will be required to drive off-road (unmaintained roads) using 4-wheel drive company vehicles on a regular basis. Navigation using GPS and/or GIS applications will also be required.
